Eating Disorder Intuitive Therapy (EDIT)™ considers eating disorders coping mechanisms, rather than illnesses or diseases. Although eating disorders can go to an extreme and require medical intervention, EDIT™ is designed for individuals who are experiencing mild-to-moderate eating disorder symptoms, which present no immediate medical risks. As such, EDIT™ treatment is not focused on medical stabilization but rather involves addressing the cause of eating disorders and not just the symptoms. EDIT™ Strategies are provided to allow symptom reduction, with true symptom resolution being a natural outcome when clients address the root cause of their eating disorders.
EDIT™ involves the Practice of Five Principles to Replace Eating Disorder Thoughts with Intuitive Healing Wisdom
The voice of of the Eating Disorder (ED) chatters on endlessly in the mind of Destructive Dieters, Anorexic, Bulimic and Binge Eaters and other disordered eaters, making judgments and demands such as: “I’m so fat! How many calories are in that? I should go workout! I shouldn’t eat sugar! I’ve got to lose weight! I’m not good enough unless I’m thin enough.” But deeper within the individual is a healing voice — their Intuitive Therapist (IT) — gently whispering, “You are lovable as you are! You are more than a body! You are worthy! You deserve health!” However and unfortunately, amidst the chatter of ED, IT can be hard to hear. EDIT™ Treatment involves making thought edits (ED-IT)s, to gently and effectively replace ED with IT. The EDIT™ Certified practitioner models the voice of the intuitive therapist (IT) until the client can begin to hear it within themselves.
Sometimes it can feel like an eating disorder is one’s identity but the predominant thoughts and behaviors which are dictated by the eating disorder are actually a projection of a false self. Recovery involves a transformation from this false self to the true self. The false self is typically born at a critical stage in development (generally between the ages of 7-10 years) when the individual begins to perceive they are separate from others and seeks acceptance from others as a means of feeling connected. The individual in this stage might wonder “Who should I be in order to fit in, be accepted, feel loved?” At this point, the false self identity emerges in efforts to be “good enough.”
Eating disorders can arise as the false self strives to achieve body perfection based on society’s ideals. Eating Disorders can also be a means of coping with the overall incongruence of having a false self. Deep inside, the true self hungers to be expressed and the eating disorder is an attempt to feed this hunger with excess food, or ignore it through starvation. Recovery is about remembering and reclaiming one’s true self and feeding one’s true hunger. EDIT™ facilitates this transformation from false self to true self as clients discover they’ve been “good enough” all along.

We’re all born with the ability to care for ourselves and eat intuitively, but dieting and other weight loss messages can interfere with our ability to hear or heed the suggestions of our intuition. * Although complete recovery from eating disorders is possible, relapse is also a possibility, as with any and all eating disorder treatment. It is normal for clients to return to counseling for more guidance after the initial work is done, either to learn from a relapse experience or to reinforce recovery.
